PostHeaderIcon JOYCE GASPE, CANDIDATE FOR KAWENOKE DISTRICT CHIEF

VOTE JOYCE GASPE

On March 6, 2010 vote for Joyce Gaspe for Kawenoke District Chief.

Joyce Gaspe has been a lifelong resident of Kawenoke and is the daughter of Joseph and Nancy David Gaspe. Her siblings include Grace Barnes, Pauline Cuthand, Gordon and Russell.

Joyce completed her primary education on Kawenoke and her secondary at St. Lawrence High School in Cornwall. After graduating from high school Joyce obtained a position with Bell Canada working in Montreal and Ottawa. She retired with 31 years of service. She then worked at TJ Maxx for ten years.

Joyce's parents were involved with community politics as her father had been a band counselor and her mother was a clan mother.

Interest in community politics exploded for Joyce this past summer with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) abandoning their post. Joyce was asked to attend a women's meeting and has not looked back since then. She has devoted many hours to the protest at the four corners. She tirelessly assisted with the cooking, picking up groceries, delivering meals, fundraising, and watching the fire to give the firekeepers a break.

Joyce has participated in many discussions concerning local politics. She has also been involved many meetings with local and area politicians concerning current issues with Kawenoke.

Attending the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal at Nav Canada this fall for Fallan Davis vs Canada Border Services Agency, has inspired her and given her the resolve that yes you can challenge the establishment. Joyce showed her committment to the tribunal by attending every session.

If you want to go for the long fight, you can be heard. You don't need to hire a lawyer. It can be done if you choose to do it!

Conquering her own personal health issues, has been done through perseverance and optimism. She is not a quitter and will use these qualities to fight for issues concerning Kawenoke. She will make decisions that are good for all of the community of Kawenoke.

With all of Joyce's life experiences and the knowledge that she has gained during the past year, she is willing to put this knowledge to work for the community of Kawenoke.

TRIBAL REFERENDUM JANUARY 30, 2010

A St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Referendum was voted on January 30, 2010. The unofficial count by the tribal election board was 538 votes for the proposal with 371 votes against it. There were 27 spoiled ballots.

The referendum was in favor of the tribal council's pursuit of a $500 million casino resort in Monticello. The question was "Do you approve the tribe pursuing off-reservation gaming in the Catskills."

More than 3000 jobs would be created, with first preference to Akwesasne Mohawks.

There was a referendum vote in November that was defeated. The vote at that time was 178 to 140. The results were deemed null and void because prior public notice was not made for the required 30 days.

The results will be made official after a five day period provided there are no appeals.
