ROGER LEWIS LOUIS THOMPSON
CANDIDATE FOR KAWEHNOKE DISTRICT CHIEF
Roger Thompson, husband of Margaret (Peggy) Pyke and son of James and Esther Benedict Thompson. He is the father to Ivan, Robyn, Tyler and Mathew. He also has five grandchildren.
His siblings include Robert, Norris, Velma, Luke, Timmy, Maureen, Ruth, Lucille and Stephanie.
Roger is a lifelong resident of Kawehnoke. For generations , his family has lived on Kawehnoke.
His primary education began on Kawehnoke, Central Public in Cornwall and he graduated in 1974 from General Vanier Secondary School. He graduated with a four year technical diploma. He received certification as a welder operator from St. Lawrence College in Cornwall. He also has the following certificates from St. Lawrence College electronic and digital engineering, horticulture and general machining. He received a horticulture diploma from Kemptville College of Agricultural Technology in 2004.
Roger is a fluent Mohawk speaker, as are some of his children and grandchildren. He comes from a long history of political activism. His family, including his mother, have served Akwesasonon in various political positions.
Roger has a varied work experience including the following: carpentry renovations and new home construction, electrician`s assistant, and he has been an iron worker. He has been a project manager, a crew leader and a research and development safety officer. Safety, research and development of new projects, implementation and testing of specialized jigs and fixtures are some examples of Roger’s work experience.
Owning his own business has also been part of Roger’s life experience. He has operated Thompson Marina and Welding and is a partner operator of Akwesasne Gardens.
His professional memberships include Landscape Ontario and the Intertribal Plant Nursery council.
Roger`s interests include the following: fishing, boating, recreational vehicle use, nature watching, metal detecting, current events in Indian Country, environmental Issues and antique cars and trucks.
Volunteering in the community has also been something that Roger has done. He constructed and used his horticulture skills to build and operate a greenhouse for the Akwesasne Task Force on the Environment. The plant material that was grown was for the community and school use.
He has received training in recognition and prevention of Emerald Ash Borer.
During the summer of 2009, he volunteered two boats and two operators while the bridge was closed.
Consulting on various environmental issues in and around Akwesasne has also been done by Roger.
Roger has many talents and interests. He would make an excellent leader if elected to serve the community of Kawehnoke. He is concerned with the future of the youth and is looking out for his children and grandchildren. His family is very important to him and he has shown support in their endeavours in life, including their educational aspirations.
